Physical Education
The PE curriculum at Bishop Barrington Academy has an overarching goal, which is that all students will acquire the skills and knowledge to lead healthy, active lifestyles. To achieve this goal, the curriculum itself is designed to remove potential barriers that students may face, ensuring they receive a world class PE experience. The curriculum provides opportunities for students to build successful relationships, to foster collaboration as well as opportunities for students to demonstrate our values of respect, inspiration, resilience and excellence.
The curriculum experience encourages students to participate in our wide and varying range of enrichment opportunities, which includes: The Elite Sports Academy, The Leadership Academy, and on and off-site visits to local and regional sporting establishments. For all students, in particular those who may face challenges related to a socially and economically disadvantaged background, the PE curriculum provides rich and enjoyable experiences and opportunities which they may not have access to otherwise.
We offer a bespoke approach to our curriculum, ensuring students’ experiences have appropriate balance, rigour and relevance. This includes a range of tailored pathways for students from year 7 to year 11, including aesthetic or games-based pathways in year 9 and a range of options for students at key stage 4, including: Sport Studies, Sport Science and Dance. These pathways allow successful transition to learning beyond Year 11, with the curriculum offering a logical sequence to further study in courses offered at Bishop Auckland College, Durham Sixth Form, QE College and more.
Our curriculum is a journey which embodies the academy’s sentence, ensuring students have the knowledge, skills and qualifications that opens the doors to the future of further related sport education and related sport employment.
