Food Technology
The Food Preparation and Nutrition curriculum at Bishop Barrington Academy enables students to acquire core food knowledge and provides opportunities to apply their knowledge to local and wider community contexts and settings, whether it be cultural, dietary or economic contexts. The curriculum nurtures independent learning, with students developing the capacity to: be creative and think ‘on their feet’ and to solve problems as they arise.
The academy’s RISE values are embedded throughout our curriculum. The practical, kitchen based learning, which is woven throughout the curriculum, requires students to exhibit and demonstrate respect; practising how to safely and effectively work in a food industry kitchen.
The curriculum is designed to offer appropriate challenge and inspires students to demonstrate the highest standards in practical skills. The curriculum, which is taught by food specialist teachers with a wealth of specialist knowledge and experience, is accessible to all students. Support is given and equipment provided to students whose disadvantaged backgrounds may impact the financial means to provide the ingredients and other equipment needed to engage in practical kitchen based learning.
Our curriculum is balanced. It provides students with skills for life, as they acquire the knowledge and skills to prepare, cook and present quality food to a high standard. The provision of plentiful and practical learning opportunities is woven throughout the curriculum. These opportunities enable students to demonstrate flair, experimentation, innovation and creativity. The culmination of powerful food knowledge and practical experiences opens doors to further study of food preparation and nutrition beyond year 11 and equips students with the potential to pursue a successful career in an industry which has one of the largest rates of employment in County Durham.
