Reading Passport
At Bishop Barrington Academy, we know that all students will enjoy reading, but they might not have found the right book yet.
We have asked all subject teachers, across a range of subjects, to identify books linked to their subject areas, so that students can try reading a range of genres, styles and authors, including a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, linked to a range of subject areas.
We collected these suggestions and created a Reading Passport, linked to our Academy Reward’s system. If students read three books from their reading passport, they receive 100 class chart points and if they read six books of the recommended books, they will receive an Amazon gift card, which they can use to purchase their own books. Initially, we are trying to motivate reluctant readers, using extrinsic motivation, to encourage students to read to achieve a prize. However, over time, we are confident that students’ intrinsic motivation will overpower their need for a reward when they see their confidence with reading increase.
