Music

Our curriculum is accessible to all students. It encourages them to appreciate, articulate and engage in the creativity of music and its global impact on and expression of culture, belief and meaning. 

In recognition of the disadvantaged context of nearly 50% of our cohort, students are supported and financial barriers overcome, to ensure the curriculum provides opportunities for all students to express, appreciate, perform and respond to music. The cost of peripatetic music sessions are subsidised to ensure all students have access to music tuition offered by the Durham Music Service. The curriculum offers a range of enrichment opportunities, from school musical events to the fortnightly scheduled music club. 

Our curriculum is coherent, and balanced. Opportunities for students to explore and discover the truth, meaning and beauty of music are woven throughout the curriculum; as are the core knowledge of language, concepts, and codes of practical music and theory and how they are exhibited in the notational world.

The curriculum is carefully planned to ensure integrated progression. Progression is mapped in the three areas of: analysis, composition and performance. These areas themselves are linked to the two ‘curriculum spheres’ of theory (e.g. elements of music, musical notation, styles and genre) and practical knowledge (ability to play: according to notation, executing elements of musical, ability to play instruments).  

The culmination of our curriculum journey is that students are brought into a world of appreciation, sharing, performance, and expression.
